We’re delighted to welcome Ian Ritchie to the ranks of guest designers at The London Type Foundry. Ian was a founding partner at JKR (Jones Knowles Ritchie) — one of the world’s most successful and creative design consultancies.

Ian started signwriting in his spare time at art college back in the seventies, skills he put to good use when sketching the initial letterforms for Lüthold.

Following the initial sketchwork, Ian collaborated with Paul Harpin to draw the key letterforms for Lüthold Sans. The resulting design was a condensed sans serif which was authoritative and yet full of character; pronounced ink traps and high contrast elements, most noticeably on spines and crossbars, gave the typeface real personality. 

 

It was quickly decided that a separate text family should be added to the range for additional versatility. Lüthold Sans Text is a medium width type family with lower contrast strokes, more suitable for body copy use at smaller sizes. The family contains 8 styles with 4 weights from ExtraLight to Bold and accompanying italics.
