LDN Blackheath Sans, designed by Paul Harpin, was inspired by lettering on spiritual calligraphic paintings created by Paul’s former boss John Miles, of Banks & Miles. With the permission of John’s family the typeface will be dedicated to him. 

John Miles was a design consultant based in Blackheath, where Paul still lives. John died on 27th December 2023. He was a kind man, a brilliant and thoughtful designer and boss, great fun to be around and much loved by his clients. 

Harpin says “I loved working for John and I love the acrobatic ampersands he used in his art. What struck me about the lettering on the paintings was the vast array of ligatures John had created”. I have designed 90 ligatures. I asked his daughter if John was a religious man and she said no, but he thought the bible was a “bloody good read”.

LDN Blackheath Sans is a striking display face with tapered stems, available in a single Regular weight.

Crammed full of discretionary ligatures, and with a small cap lower case floating above the baseline, this inventive headline font provides a whole host of possible typographic pairings for the end user.
