LDN Bow Script, designed by Paul Harpin, was inspired by a memorial plaque to the Republican poet John Milton — spotted high up on the wall of Saint Mary-le-Bow church. The original plaque is in a very poor state — it is an epitaph to Milton by John Dryden. Unusually the weight of the lower case strokes are at the top and bottom. But when they come together with the caps, and simpler small caps, they do seem to work well together.

Although carved in stone and gilded the original plaque probably owes more to great penmanship than letter carving. The new LDN Bow Script is loaded with extra ligatures and optional alternate characters; for example there are six capital letter Ls.

The three poets in Milton’s epitaph are Virgil (Italy), Homer (Greece), Shakespeare (England) and Dryden feels that Milton possessed the better aspects of all three, making him, in his view, the greatest poet — hence the inclusion of Paul’s first Greek letterforms.

Do try setting some poetry, but we also feel Bow Script would be great for packaging, especially for food — and the huge range of ligatures and swashes will make great book cover designs. LDN Bow Script is available in a single Regular weight with an extended Latin & Greek character set that also includes small caps. Try it out below.
